Elden Ring: Moonveil Katana location and best build

There are a handful of weapons, spells, and abilities that are just stronger than everything else in Elden Ring. With the right upgrades and stats, you really can become incredibly powerful, and revisiting those early areas will allow you to absolutely walk those previously "tough" foes.

One of the most powerful weapons in Elden Ring right now is the Moonveil Katana. This sharp blade allows you to retain a melee-focused playstyle, but it scales heavily with INT, allowing you to focus all of your points into that, freeing you up to mix your sword skills with some devastating magical attacks.

To find the Moonveil Katana and our recommendations for builds, just read our guide below. We also have many more Elden Ring guides to help you through the game.

Moonveil Katana location - Elden Ring

The Moonveil Katana is hidden away in Gael Tunnel, the entrance to which is in Caelid. Travel to the Rotview Balcony Site of Grace and then head South over the rocks here. You'll come to a graveyard. Pass through and hop down the cliff to the South. As you drop down, the entrance to Gael Tunnel will be behind you.

Gael Tunnel is a fairly simple dungeon with a boss at the end, the Magma Wyrm. This boss has vicious flame attacks and a tail that can hit you at a distance. You're best off sticking close to its legs while dealing damage.

Once the Magma Wyrm is defeated you will earn the Moonveil Katana, in addition to a Dragon Heart.

Moonveil Katana build - Elden Ring

The Moonveil Katana requires 12 Strength, 18 Dexterity, and 23 Intelligence to wield. These are fairly high requirements, but it scales with INT incredibly well. As a result you should level a Moonveil Katana build with most points invested in Intelligence. It's still a short-range weapon though, so you should leave some points for Endurance to enable you to equip heavy armor while still rolling through attacks.

The best part of the Moonveil Katana is the unique skill it has, Transient Moonlight. This will sheathe the weapon. Follow this up with a light attack for a horizontal arc attack, or a heavy attack for a vertical arc that goes a farther distance.

Invest your level-up points primarily into Intelligence, Endurance, Mind, Dexterity, and Vigor, and you will be able to ignore pretty much all other stats in a build that focuses on this weapon. To make the most of your high INT you should equip a staff as an off-hand weapon you can swap to. One great suggestion for that is the Meteorite Staff, which has S-rank INT scaling by default.
